The Institute for Policy, Advocacy, and Governance (IPAG), an international knowledge outfit from Bangladesh, has launched its global publication, titled “G20’s Global South Years (2022-2025): Towards an Inclusive, Prosperous, and Peaceful World”, at the G20 Leadership Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa today.

The two-day summit will conclude tomorrow, according to a press release.

The book presents a comprehensive account of the unprecedented sequence of four consecutive G20 presidencies from 2022 to 2025 — led by Indonesia, India, Brazil, and South Africa — marking a rare period of Global South leadership on the world stage.

Spearheaded by Prof Syed Munir Khasru, chairman of IPAG and the book’s editor and senior author, the publication features chapters contributed by an exceptional group of G20 Sherpas, including Amitabh Kant, Sherpa of the Indian G20 Presidency in 2023 and the book’s lead author.

The publication offers rare insights into the decision-making processes, negotiations, and institutional dynamics that have shaped G20 policy outcomes.

It highlights key milestones achieved during the Global South-led presidencies, including the launch of the Pandemic Fund, the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, Digital Public Infrastructure, and the admission of the African Union as a permanent G20 member.

The book also documents how the Global South presidencies confronted multiple crises — geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, debt vulnerabilities, and climate pressures, while advancing agendas on food security, digital transformation, just energy transitions, and multilateral development bank reform.

It further explains how each presidency worked to move the G20 beyond crisis response and toward long-term structural transformation, particularly for developing economies.

Described as a rich intellectual resource, the publication is positioned as a valuable reference for policymakers, scholars, and practitioners seeking to understand how Global South leadership can catalyse cooperation, inspire reform, and strengthen global resilience during a period of profound uncertainty.

Over the years, IPAG has built a strong presence within the G20 and G7 communities through its thought leadership, research, and policy engagement, establishing itself as a credible Global South voice in global governance.

Prof Khasru has served as co-chair of several taskforces under both the G20 and G7 and has authored 25 policy briefs for the two groups.

For the South African G20 Presidency, he led the policy brief on just energy transition, collaborating with institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), IRENA, and TERI.

For the G7 Canadian Presidency in 2025, IPAG is the only entity to have produced policy briefs in three critical areas: artificial intelligence, data governance, and renewable energy transitions.

Although Bangladesh is not a member of the G20, IPAG is representing the voice of the developing Global South through its research and policy contributions.
